Analyze Shooting Efficiency (Effective Field Goal %)
What is Effective Field Goal Percentage?
Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) is a shooting efficiency metric that adjusts raw field goal percentage to account for the added value of the 3-point shot. Because a 3-pointer is worth 50% more than a 2-pointer, eFG% gives shooters 1.5 "points" of credit for every long-distance make, providing a much more accurate view of their scoring impact.
How to Calculate eFG%
The formula is designed to show what a player\'s field goal percentage would be if all of their shots were 2-pointers:
(FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA
Example: A player shoots 4-of-10 from the field, but 2 of those makes were 3-pointers. Their eFG% is (4 + 1) / 10 = 50%.
eFG% Benchmarks
How does your shooting stack up? In the modern basketball era, these are the general efficiency tiers:
- 60%+ (Elite): Reserved for the league\'s most efficient snipers and dominant paint finishers.
- 55% - 60% (Great): A very productive professional or college shooter.
- 50% - 55% (Average): The standard baseline for a starting rotation player.
- Under 50% (Poor): Suggests a player who takes inefficient shots or struggles with accuracy.
eFG% vs TS%
While eFG% is a massive improvement over standard FG%, it does not include free throws. To see a player\'s absolute total scoring efficiency including their ability to draw fouls, you should use our True Shooting % (TS%) tool. eFG% is best for evaluating pure shooting skill, while TS% is best for evaluating overall scoring value.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is eFG% in basketball?
eFG% stands for Effective Field Goal Percentage. It is a metric that adjusts a player's field goal percentage to account for the fact that three-point shots are worth 50% more than two-point shots.
How is eFG% calculated?
The formula is: (Field Goals Made + 0.5 × 3-Pointers Made) / Field Goals Attempted. This gives 1.5 'points' of credit for every made 3-pointer.
What is a good eFG%?
In the NBA, an eFG% above 54% is considered solid, while 60% or higher is elite. In high school and college, an eFG% above 50% is generally very efficient.
Why is eFG% better than raw FG%?
Raw FG% penalizes players who take many 3-point shots because those shots are harder to make. eFG% rewards them for the extra points those shots provide, giving a more accurate picture of scoring efficiency.
