Vikas Garg Mahadev Case: ED’s ₹940.77 Crore Attachment Explained
The June attachment, ED’s allegations, Ebix’s corporate links and the company responses, explained from dated records.
The Vikas Garg Mahadev case involves a provisional asset attachment that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) values at approximately ₹940.77 crore. Company filings date the order to June 5, 2026; ED announced it on July 10, alleging that illegal betting proceeds reached entities controlled by the businessman.

KEY FACTS AT A GLANCE
- ED’s valuation: Approximately ₹940.77 crore in provisionally attached assets.
- Order date: June 5, 2026, according to company disclosures.
- Company role: Ebix Limited’s July 15 filing identified Garg as a promoter and director.
- Case: The Mahadev Online Book/Skyexchange money laundering investigation.
- Legal distinction: Attachment and allegations do not establish guilt; the companies have stated their responses.
This explainer examines the June order and subsequent developments using records reviewed through October 14, 2026. Those records do not establish a new October attachment in this matter.
When did the Vikas Garg ED attachment happen?
Ebix Limited’s June 23 disclosure identifies the provisional attachment order as dated June 5. Vikas Lifecare, another listed company, referred to the same order in its June 24 filing. ED’s July 10 press release provides the agency’s approximate valuation and describes the categories of property involved.

Ebix disclosed on July 15 that Garg had been taken into ED custody on July 14. Separately, a September 21 PTI report carried by The Times of India said ED filed its fifth supplementary prosecution complaint on September 10, naming Garg among 42 individuals and entities. That filing date comes from reporting; the underlying court complaint was not available for this review.
What assets and which Ebix company are involved?
ED lists residential properties, land parcels, equity shares and other securities belonging to Garg, family members and entities it says he owns or controls. The approximately ₹940.77 crore figure is ED’s stated valuation, not an independently verified assessment or a judicial finding about the assets’ origin.
Eraaya Lifespaces became Ebix Limited on June 18, 2026, according to its annual report. That listed Indian company is distinct from Ebix Inc., the US business it acquired. The report identifies an affected asset owned by Ebix Limited: its investment in Ebix Inc. That disclosure does not provide a complete share-by-share breakdown of the attachment.
How does ED allege the betting money moved?
In its July release, ED alleges that Mahadev Online Book and Skyexchange proceeds reached Garg-controlled entities through “accommodation entries,” financial entries arranged against cash, as well as shell entities and successive transactions intended to disguise the money’s origin. The agency alleges that the funds were then used to acquire shares, securities and other assets. That remains ED’s account.
ThePrint’s September 23 report, describing ED’s prosecution complaint, says the agency alleges that funds reached Garg’s companies through foreign portfolio investment (FPI) and foreign direct investment (FDI) routes and were used to acquire Ebix Inc. Business Today also reports a bond route, citing unnamed sources. These channels may overlap; the July 10 release does not detail them. Foreign investment or a bond issue is not, by itself, evidence of money laundering.
- Alleged Mahadev Online Book / Skyexchange proceedsED alleges
- Cash-backed accommodation entries, shell entities and layered transactionsED alleges
- Entities ED links to Vikas GargED alleges
- Shares, securities and other assets
The focus on ownership and transaction chains connects with the wider scrutiny described in Dyutam’s coverage of FATF’s gambling-related money laundering indicators. Those general indicators do not establish what happened in this case. The investigation also sits within India’s wider action against offshore betting.
What have the companies and Garg’s counsel said?
Ebix Limited’s June 23 response says neither the company nor its promoters had been alleged to have committed a predicate offense in those proceedings. A predicate offense is the underlying offense said to generate proceeds for laundering. That is a narrower statement than a denial of every money laundering allegation, and it is the company’s position.
Vikas Lifecare’s June 24 financial filing states a separate position:
“neither involved in nor a beneficiary of the alleged activities”
— Vikas Lifecare, June 24, 2026 filing
Vikas Lifecare said it was contesting the attachment through the appropriate legal forums. In its September annual report, Ebix separately maintained that its fundraising complied with applicable requirements and that independent third-party conduct outside its applicable legal obligations should not be attributed to the company. It said the proceedings had not restrained ordinary business operations as of that report. These statements do not amount to a court clearing either company.
ThePrint reported on September 23 that senior advocate Madhav Khurana had challenged the basis and evidence for Garg’s arrest at the time of his detention.
What does provisional attachment mean?
Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, attachment restricts transfers and other dealings with specified property. Section 5 provides for provisional attachment. Section 8 provides for the Adjudicating Authority to decide whether to confirm an attachment and sets out later steps. Confirmation and final confiscation are distinct stages. An attachment is not a conviction.
The reviewed company records describe this attachment as provisional. This explainer has not verified a later confirmation or confiscation order, or Garg’s current custody status. It therefore does not treat a dated disclosure as proof of the case’s present procedural position.
Has SEBI made a finding on share manipulation?
Business Today, citing inputs received by India Today TV, reports that ED alerted the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to suspected share-price manipulation. A referral or investigation is not a finding of misconduct. No matching final SEBI determination was located in the reviewed record, so the reported manipulation claim remains an allegation here.
FAQs
When was the attachment order issued?
Company disclosures identify June 5, 2026 as the order date. ED’s public announcement followed on July 10, valuing the attached assets at approximately ₹940.77 crore.
How are Eraaya Lifespaces and Ebix connected?
Eraaya Lifespaces was renamed Ebix Limited on June 18, 2026. Its annual report describes affected equity investment held in Ebix Inc., a separate corporate entity.
Does the attachment prove money laundering?
No. Provisional attachment is a property measure under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. It does not establish guilt, and confirmation and confiscation involve separate legal stages.
Has SEBI established share-price manipulation in this case?
The reviewed record did not establish a final SEBI finding matching the reported referral. Business Today reports that ED alerted SEBI; that remains distinct from a determination of misconduct.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
