Magic Mile Calculator
Predict your race potential from a 1-mile time trial.
What is the Magic Mile?
The Magic Mile is a prediction method developed by legendary running coach Jeff Galloway. It's one of the most trusted training tools for recreational runners seeking to set realistic race goals. The concept is beautifully simple: you run one mile at a hard but controlled effort, and from that single time trial, you can predict your potential finishing times for distances ranging from 5K to a full marathon.
Unlike complex VO2 max tables or lab testing, the Magic Mile is accessible to everyone with access to a track or a measured mile. The method has been refined over decades of coaching experience and accounts for the fact that recreational runners slow down more predictably over distance than pure aerobic capacity formulas suggest.
How to Calculate Race Times from the Magic Mile
The Galloway formula uses progressive multipliers to account for endurance fade as distance increases:
- 5K Pace: Add 33 seconds to your mile time.
- 10K Pace: 5K Pace × 1.15
- Half Marathon Pace: 10K Pace × 1.20
- Marathon Pace: Half Marathon Pace × 1.30
If you run your Magic Mile in 8:00 (480 seconds):
5K Pace = 8:00 + 0:33 = 8:33/mile → 5K Time = 26:34
10K Pace = 8:33 × 1.15 = 9:50/mile → 10K Time = 1:01:08
Your predicted Marathon pace would be approximately 13:16/mile, for a finish time around 5:47:00.
Why Use the Magic Mile Method?
Unlike generic race predictors based solely on VO2 max, the Magic Mile is specifically calibrated for recreational runners. Galloway's multipliers are intentionally conservative, recognizing that most runners lack the race-specific training that elite athletes undergo. This conservative approach ensures you can achieve (or even exceed) your predicted times on race day, rather than falling short due to overly aggressive pacing.
Limitations and Best Practices
The Magic Mile predicts your potential, not a guarantee. For accuracy, you must have built adequate aerobic endurance for your target distance. A runner who completes a fast Magic Mile but has only run 10 miles as their longest training run should not expect to hit the predicted marathon time without proper long-run preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Magic Mile?
The Magic Mile is a prediction tool developed by Coach Jeff Galloway. You run one mile as fast as you can (paced evenly), and use that time to predict your potential performance in longer events.
How accurate is the Magic Mile?
It is widely considered very accurate for recreational runners, provided you have done the appropriate endurance training for the target distance. It predicts potential, not a guarantee.
What is the formula?
5K Pace = Mile Time + 33 sec/mile. 10K Pace = 5K Pace x 1.15. Half Marathon = 10K Pace x 1.2. Marathon = Half Marathon Pace x 1.15 (Roughly). Galloway's specific multipliers are applied in this tool.
